Hard Drive Squeak When Powering Down

I added a second internal hard drive to my AK2. It is a Seagate BarraCuda 1TB 5400 rpm SATA hard drive.

When I power down the ACEPC, this hard drive makes a brief, loud squeak sound. It sounds as if the hard drive is not being properly told to enter power off state before it loses power.

Also sometimes when first turning the ACEPC on, it quickly cycles booting a couple of times (maybe 5 seconds each boot attempt) before finally booting into Windows. Each time it cycles, the second hard drive makes the squeak sound.

Any idea what is causing this?

gbace,

If you're absolutely positive the noise is coming from the HDD, and if you have another device with which to do the following, you may want to temporarily attach the HDD to another device in order to see if it's making the noise with that unit as well. Just to test for when it starts up and shuts down, not to actually boot to or use.

You may want to also run a chkdsk on the drive to see if there are any errors. And, just to be safe, and if you have the room on something, you may want to think about backing up the info on the drive.

Unfortunately, clicking or squeaking is often an indication that a hard drive is failing.

Others, including the admin, may have additional ideas.

The first thing you need to try is to put the hard disk on another computer and check whether there is the same abnormal noise. If so, then it is a hard disk problem. It is recommended that you replace the hard disk. If your hard disk is a mechanical hard disk, it may cause problems with excessive power consumption due to large capacity. At the same time, it is normal for the mechanical hard disk to make noises when working.
