A few things that I do to help performance are...
1. Setting the desktop as a solid color. Settings >> Personalization >> Background
2. Turning off transparency effects. Settings >> Personaliztion >> Colors
3. Setting the performance option to "Adjust For Best Performance" (pic below). Control Panel >> System >> Advanced System Settings >> Settings.
