One of the best ways to get the most out of your PC is to make sure you have the latest version of Windows 11 installed. When you check for updates, the computer will also search for the latest device drivers, which can also help improve computer performance.
Check for updates
Select the Start button, then select Settings > Windows Update > Check for Updates.
Do one of the following:
If the status says "You are on the latest version," go ahead and check for optional updates.
If the status says "Updates available", select "Install Now".
Select the update you want to install, and then select Install.
Restart your computer and see if it works better.
There are sometimes optional updates available (such as new non-critical drivers) that may help.
To check for optional updates
Select the Start button, then select Settings > Windows Update > Advanced Options > Optional Updates.
If there are other updates available, select them, then select Download and Install.
Restart your computer and see if it works better.
If the computer is still slow, continue to the next tip.
Restart your computer, then open only the apps you need
Opening multiple apps, programs, web browsers, etc. at the same time can slow down your computer. Opening a lot of browser tabs at the same time can also slow things down considerably. If this happens, close any apps, browser tabs, etc. that you don't need, and see if this helps speed up your computer. If this doesn't seem to work, restart your computer and open only the apps, programs, and browser windows you need.
Restart the computer
Select the Start button, then select Power > Restart.
After your computer restarts, open only the apps you need, then close those apps when you're done.
In some cases, apps written for previous versions of Windows will still work on Windows 11, but may slow down your PC. If this happens after you open a program, check the software company's website for a version update, or run the program compatibility troubleshooter.
To run the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter
Select Search, enter troubleshoot in the search box, and then select Troubleshoot Settings > Additional Troubleshooting.
Under Miscellaneous, select the Run button next to Program Compatibility Troubleshooter.
Select the program you're having trouble with, select Next, and then continue to complete the troubleshooting.
