GK3V - I am better off with internal M.2 128GB SSD or with 2.5 INTEL SSD Series 320 160GB?

Post by vzmr82 »

Hi

I just bought a GK3V Mini PC, with 6GB RAM and 128GB.

Anticipating the 128GB SSD would be of eMMC kind, I took an Intel SSD 320 Series with 160GB I had as spare, and added to the MiniPC, and then proceed with the cloning of existing SSD to the one I just added.

I followed the guide in this forum (here - viewtopic.php?f=33&t=373) and then took the opportunity to take a speed test using the Cristal Disk Mark.

These are the results I got:

.
The Intel is half speed of the internal SSD...

I then opened the case, I found out which kind of SSD was there. This is what I found out:

.

I used the PartitionGuru to get more information related to the HooDisk M.2 SATA SSD...

and the Intel SSD
.

.

Looking to the specifications of both SSDs, the HooDisk is rated at 515mb/s (read) and 190mb/s (write) and the Intel is rated at 270mb/s (read) and 165mb/s (write).

It seams I am better of with using the HooDisk as my main SSD. It doesn't seem to be an eMMC type of disk and it is twice as fast as that old Intel.

Are these conclusions correct?

Thanks in advance.

vzmr82,

That's correct. ACEPC has been moving away from eMMC storage with some of their models and going with m.2 SATA instead. Personally, I would stick with the drive it came with due to the speed, as the little bit of extra storage space the Intel would give wouldn't be worth that much of a speed hit. Granted, not everything needs speed, but a higher speed drive does make a unit more responsive.

If you don't really have a use for the Intel drive you may want to look into an external USB enclosure for it so you could use it for external storage. You can find pretty inexpensive ones on Amazon or similar sites. It's just an idea.
