Streaming issue: stuttering

Post by babhemu2003 »

Hi ALL,
I am new to the minipc world and have an average understanding of PCs. I bought my AM08PRO one week ago, primarily for streaming (Netflix, HBO, Prime Video) to my TV. For some reason, when streaming there is a fair amount of stuttering making for a rather annoying video and audio experience. :-(

I have good internet speed (600GB) and use a LAN cable so download speeds should not be an issue. Speed tests confirm that there is no throttling. The HDMI cable is good.

Previously, I used my 9-year-old Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon for streaming with the same setup and did not experience any issues.

Considering that the AM08PRO is new and faster than my Thinkpad, I expect a good viewing experience.

Can anyone advise on what I can do to resolve these issues?

Much appreciated!
:-)

Hi babhemu2003! You said your internet speed is 600GB - that's really high. Do you mean 600Mbps? Most locations are barely getting "gigabit" speeds which are around 1Gbps (one gigabit per second, which is roughly 125MB/second maximum speed). Where do you live and who is your internet provider?

Do you notice any issues watching videos on Youtube? I know it's able to adjust video quality to avoid buffering, and I think the other services can do the same.

You said you're connected to your internet via wired LAN cable, which is great. Can you run a test on https://speedtest.net/ ? That should show you what speeds you're getting to the general internet. Netflix owns https://fast.com/ which can also be used to test your connection, so see what you get there. https://testmy.net/ is another site I found when doing internet speed tests.

I assume you're streaming through a Browser like Chrome or Edge, although many of these streaming services now have a Windows Store App. Can you verify your app/browser is updated, and also that your system is not missing any drivers or updates?

1 Gbps is 1000 Mbps, or around 1024 MB/second. :) Because each packet contains a time stamp and other metadata that consume part of that, the amount transferred in a test will be closer to 940 Mbps for a 1 Gbps connection.

1 Gbps is one Gigabit per second which leads to 125MB/s but i guess that's what you meant :D

Anyhow that should be more than enough for streaming...

Yes, of course... divide by 8. My mistake. What an embarrassing first post! You're correct; should be plenty.

My suggestions for the OP: Make sure you're streaming using the same settings, if possible, for the AM08Pro as you used on the former device, including buffer sizes and connection-specific settings, since the streaming device is only thing you changed. If you are using a different Ethernet cable, try using the one which worked with the previous device. Please try using the most updated version of the OS you can obtain via Windows Update. That can help a lot.

Don't know if the OP has been back since asking about this. I'm curious how things turned out. I haven't had many issues with streaming on any device (including low-spec phones)... with the exception of Disney Plus, which is the worst service I've encountered - buffering, telling me my internet is down, etc. So let's hope we hear back from them.
