How can I install the screen control software for the S1?

Post by hsehestedt »

I had reported a problem with Remote Desktop to the S1 lacking options for shut down but up until received no response. So, I decided to simply perform a clean install of Windows. That did indeed resolve the issue, but now I have a problem with the screen control software.

First, there is no installation program, so installed the VC++ Redistributable, and copied the files for the screen control software to a folder that I created. I then run the executable and add it to my startup group so that it will run automatically. However, I run the program, nothing is displayed in the area on the left side of the window and likewise nothing is displayed on the screen of the system. It simply looks like this:

I suspect that I am missing some startup parameters.

Could someone who has the original factory installation tell me what those parameters are?

TIP: I noticed that when the program starts you will briefly see a command prompt open that shows the command that is being run. If someone could manage to jot down what that command is, this would be most helpful. It might take running it several times to see what it says, or find the actual command in startup to see what is being run.

Follow-up: I went back to the factory installation and took a closer look. There are registry entries involved here as well. Bottom line is that in order to make this work we will need an installation program or some detailed step-by-step instructions on how to make this work.

Does using the S1 installation files reintroduce the shutdown/sleep issue with remote desktop?

No, if I use the recovery image and install from a USB Flash Drive, Remote desktop will be fine after installation, however THERE IS A BIG ISSUE to be aware of.

First, the small stuff: After installation, you are not done. You will end up booting into "Audit Mode". Upon first boot a Sysprep dialog box will be presented. DO NOT interact with it! It will go away after a few seconds. You then need to run the .cmd file on the desktop. Apologies, I don't have the name of the file in front of me, but it should be pretty obvious. This will allow the setup process to finish and cause Windows to go through the OOBE (Out Of Box Experience).

TIP: On the screen where you are asked for a password, simply press ENTER or click on next. This will initially set no password but has the advantage of you not having to supply security questions and answers. You can then set a password after Windows installation has completed.

On to the main issue:

If you only ever reinstall using the factory image, then all is fine. However, if you ever plan to install clean from a standard Microsoft image then you will want to be aware that Windows will NOT ACTIVATE! To resolve this issue, simply create or logon to a Microsoft account while still in the factory installation and then reboot. The activation status will change from activated with a digital license to activated with a digital license tied to your Microsoft account. Now, if you ever do a clean install of Windows, simply make sure to logon to the same Microsoft account and Windows will activate.

Note that after you logon to a Microsoft account, you can always switch back to a local account if you wish.

I will create a much more detailed posting about this in the next few days, but I thought I'd just provide this detail now.

Good advice. I always recommend people do this to ensure the unit's Windows Activation is logged on both Microsoft's Activation servers AND the individual's Microsoft Account. This way, if a clean install it won't Activate from the servers, it still will from the Microsoft Account.

hsehestedt,

After trying the new LED program with the clean Windows 11 install on the spare m.2 SATA drive, I tried the LCD screen control software. Though it did work at first, I believe from the unit's memory from the original drive, once I tried changing something it disappeared from the LCD screen. I did find that I'm able to use the customizable options, but none of the default options work. With the default options, the program shows the blank info on the left side, like in your image, and the LCD screen itself is just completely blank.

The funny thing is, when I put the original drive back in and started the unit, the LCD screen showed the Customized screen I had used from the temporary drive once Windows was up and running, which is why I said it must temporarily store that screen option in the system's memory. I went into the program and and re-okayed the default view, and it changed back into the default view, like it had been before.

On the temporary drive with the clean Windows 11 install I was able to set up a task with the Task Scheduler for the application (TFTConfigQMake) to start on login (using the Customized layout), and Any login. Not on Windows startup, as it didn't work with that, but it works on choosing it to start on login. I also set it to "Run with highest privileges" in order to bypass the UAC screen. Without doing that, the UAC screen pops up every time you start the unit and you have to approve it to run. Right now it's running from the unzipped folder on the desktop, but on going back to the original drive I found where the unzipped folder should be. It's in C:\Windows\OEM\CYX_TftTool. It looks like the company created the OEM folder in the Windows folder, then put the unzipped LCD program folder, renamed 'CYX_TftTool', into that OEM folder. So, when I go back to that temporary drive I'll shut down the LCD screen program, create the OEM folder in C:\Windows\, then put the renamed unzipped folder into that OEM folder. Then either delete the prior task and create a new one with the new application location, or alter the existing task to the new location.

So, at least it works with the Customizable options, but it would be nice if it would work with the default options.
