Utilizing the Wi-fi module M.2 Slot on the AM06 Pro as a second SSD Slot

Post by piratefish0815 »

Hi everybody!

Since I don‘t need the Wi-fi module on my AM06 Pro I was wondering if I can replace it with a second SSD. Is that possible? And if so, how many PCIe lanes are connected to the Wi-fi M.2 Slot? Is it just one or is it the full four Lanes that would be necessary to use an SSD in that Slot at full speed?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

It has been verified with the product that it is not recommended to connect the SSD to the WiFi module port, which may cause a short circuit on the motherboard or other problems.
It can replace the original SSD, the hard disk slot of AM06 Pro (5600U) supports PCIe 3.0, M.2 2280 NVME protocol SSD, or expand the 2.5-inch SSD.
You can purchase an upgrade to AMR5, which can expand two M.2 SSDs (NVME/SATA adaptive).

Hi Barry,

thank you for clarifying that. It sounds a bit odd to me though. Isn‘t the Wi-fi module slot just a standard M.2 Slot? Shouldn‘t that be able to hold an SSD if it has the right keying?

Never mind. I brushed up on my knowledge about m.2 keying and as far as I can tell the Wi-fi Module Slot is m.2 a+e key and SSDs typically are m.2 m key (NVMe SSD) or m.2 b+m key (SATA SSD). So they don‘t fit. Additionally m.2 a+e key seems to only have one PCIe Lane (which makes sense for something like a Wi-fi module) and not the full four.

What a bummer. So no second NVMe SSD in the AM06 Pro.

Are my assumptions correct? Can you confirm that the Wi-fi Module Slot is an m.2 a+e key?

Yes, as the information you have inquired.
The M.2 wireless network card is A & E Key (PCIe x1+USB, can also support CNVi), most network card M.2 interface can not be inserted into the M.2 SSD (the position of the fool-proof port is different, SSD is generally B & M Key or M Key).

Moreover, most wireless network cards are 2230 specifications (M.2 SSDs are mostly 22110 (commonly used by servers/enterprises), 2280 (the most common), 2260, and 2242 specifications (short SSDs can be installed on long M.2 interfaces through adapter frames, or by changing the position of the fixing studs). Generally, only SSDs packaged with the main control and flash memory can be made into 2230 specifications).
