I figured out what I was doing wrong! It matters WHICH usb port the flash drive is put into. I was using one of the ports on the side of the unit. Sorry, forgot to mention that I did remove the external hard drive. I received the results shown when the upgrade files were in the c:\ folder and no USB or hard drives were connected.
