Is it possible and supported to switch off the fans completely?
If so, then I would like to test it. How does it work?

There is quite a large discrepancy between the core temperatures that the Core Temp and SpeedFan programs display when you run both side by side. SpeedFan starts just about at the ambient temperature (which I consider logical), whereas Core Temp directly jumps to 40°C+. The difference is almost 20°C...

Just used Speedfan to check the temperatures when the fan started: HD0 33C CPU1 26C CPU2 26C CPU3 24C CPU4 24C. The environment is at about 21C.
